The Right Honourable Jean Chrétien has led a distinguished political career, rich in accomplishment. A man of action, an exemplary leader, and a remarkable Canadian, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien has demonstrated great tenacity during his years in public life, illuminating the political landscape for more than four decades with valuable contributions to Canadian politics and public policy.

His political career began in 1963 when he was first elected to the House of Commons representing the constituency of Saint-Maurice. Over the following decades, he held numerous ministerial positions and served in Parliament during the tenure of six prime ministers.

Mr. Chrétien was elected Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada in 1990, becoming Leader of the Official Opposition. Following the federal election of November 4, 1993, he was sworn in as the 20th Prime Minister of Canada. Under his leadership, the Liberal Party won three consecutive majority governments.

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa, in collaboration with friends and supporters of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, is honouring his political legacy and his contribution to Canada by establishing the Jean Chrétien Scholarships at the University of Ottawa. The Jean Chrétien Scholarships will truly make a difference, promoting academic excellence and helping University of Ottawa students reach the leadership ranks of their chosen field.

PURPOSE OF FUND

Award admission scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students in Political Science or Public Administration at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ottawa.

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident;
  2. be admitted as a full-time student for the first time in an undergraduate Political Science or Public Administration program at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ottawa;
  3. have an admission average of at least 92 %; and
  4. demonstrate leadership qualities and commitment to academic and extracurricular activities.

Applications must be made through Online Scholarships and Bursaries, which can be accessed through https://scholarships.uottawa.ca, and should include:

  1. a copy of the applicant’s high school transcript;
  2. the Curriculum Vitae on Online Scholarships and Bursaries; and
  3. a letter of recommendation in support of the applicant’s leadership qualities and commitment to academic and extracurricular activities
