Cara Brown Scholarship

The purpose of the Cara Brown ringette scholarship is to aid ringette athletes in defraying the costs associating with attending post-secondary education. Because of academic scholarships I received, I was able to pursue my Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in economics and play ringette competitively without having to work part-time while in school. The 2021 article by Randy Pascal from The Sudbury Star kindly summarizes my 27-year ringette career. Along with those treasured ringette years, I have built a small business and found my life partner, Maureen, of more than 30 years.

The luxury of benefiting from a scholarship at a time when students need them the most cannot be underestimated. It assists the beneficiary to play ringette competitively while laying the foundation for home life and a career in the labour market. It opens up better options for young women than forcing them to choose when no choice is necessary.

It also gives me a chance to give back to the ringette community which has enriched my life so much. It would not have been possible if not for the parents (especially mine!), the coaches, referees, and many other volunteers who make the tournaments happen. And certainly it wouldn’t have been as enjoyable without the players I shared the ice with – some of the best ringette athletes in the world, and in Canada.

Application criteria

Applications may be made by ringette players who meet all of the criteria below:

• You are registered with one of Ringette Canada’s provincial/territorial member associations and are actively playing ringette at the AA level (or at the highest level offered in the applicant’s community) during the current playing season.
• You are entering a Canadian university on a full-time basis for the first time in the next academic year.
• You have achieved academic excellence (minimum B average or equivalent).
• You have demonstrated a strong commitment to the sport of ringette.

Applicants must be planning to attend a university located in Canada and be able to meet the institution’s admission standards.
