Scholarship Process

The 1st Infantry Division Foundation has the mission of awarding scholarships to the most deserving high school senior students of 1ID veterans. This is a competitive scholarship program made possible by the generous donations of members and friends of the 1st Infantry Division. This year (2023) we were fortunate enough to sufficiently fund fourteen scholarships of $15,000 each, to be distributed over a four-year period. We expect the number of scholarships awarded to increase in the future as funds become available.

This year we had 81 bright young students apply for scholarships which had to be narrowed down to 14 primary recipients and one alternate. The applications are judged by the foundation scholarship committee and are evaluated on student grades, essay, their personal statement and their extra- curricular activities, work experience, hobbies and awards.  I think most of the judging committee are truly in awe at the degree of excellence some of these students are able to achieve. We look forward to continuing this important program and encourage students to apply in the 2024 school year. Eligibility requirements and application instructions are noted below.

Instructions. Please provide the following information:

  1. Completed application.
  2. Essay: Choose a major problem facing our country today. Analyze the problem and give your recommendations for the solution of the problem. (Approximately 200 words)
  3. Copy of most recent transcript of your high school credits. The transcript should include grade point average and rank in class (if available) as well as standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, etc.)
  4. Letter of acceptance from university, college or trade school.
  5. Two letters of recommendation from other than relatives — one of these letters must be from the principal, a guidance counselor, or a teacher at your high school.
  6. Proof of parent’s (or grandparent’s) service with the First Infantry Division. NOTE: It is your responsibility to determine whether your parent or grandparents served in the First Infantry division. If this information does not appear on the discharge papers, it is your responsibility to prove service with the First Infantry Division in order to be eligible for the scholarship competition.

It is essential that your application be complete and received by the Foundation not later than May 15, 2024 for consideration for the following school year. Please do not staple your documents. We will acknowledge receipt of your material. Incomplete applications will not be considered by the Scholarship Committee.
