The Dwight P. Jacobus Scholarships were established by the Association of School Business Officials of Maryland (MD ASBO) to assist those citizens of the State of Maryland who require financial assistance to secure a college education. Scholarships are awarded to deserving undergraduate students pursuing a career related to School Business or Education at an accredited institution of higher education within Maryland. Dwight P. Jacobus was the first Executive Director of MD ASBO.
Number of Scholarships
Five (5) scholarships may be awarded each year. At least one scholarship will be awarded to an individual enrolled in an approved program leading to teacher certification.
Criteria for Award
Awards are made by the Maryland Association of School Business Officials based upon:
- Scholastic achievement
- Financial need
- Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores or American College Test (ACT) scores
- Quality of extra-curricular achievements
- Essay
Value of Award
Each scholarship has a value of $1,000.00 for the school year awarded; to be paid directly to the school at which the recipient is enrolled.
Eligibility
Scholarships may be awarded only to persons who have:
- Been a resident of Maryland for at least one year preceding the date of award
- Been accepted for admission at a school located in Maryland as a full-time student (as defined by the recipient's attending school)
- Demonstrated a financial need
- Achieved a minimum 3.0 overall GPA
Applicants Who Will Be Considered
- High school graduates
- Current freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior college students
- Prior recipients, who may re-apply for consideration of scholarship award by submitting a new application
The following support documentation must be submitted with the ASBO application form:
- Copy of most current high school/college transcript
- Copy of student aid report from the most current FAFSA form
- Copy of acceptance letter from an accredited institution of higher education in Maryland
- A 500-word typed essay
For High School Seniors: explain what makes you uniquely qualified to receive the Dwight P. Jacobus Scholarship. Essay must include academic achievements and activities; community and civic activities; and personal and professional goals.
For College Students: explain how you would apply your individual experiences; ongoing education and skill set within a school system. Essay must include how you've overcome obstacles you didn't anticipate.
