The Alma Harris Scholarship Fund was established by Don Harris at the Juneau Community Foundation in honor of his wife Alma Harris who taught English at JDHS for over 20 years. The Alma Harris Scholarship is to support a senior graduating from a Juneau High School to pursue a higher education at a University, College, or Vocational school. All graduating seniors from a Juneau High School are welcome to apply, selection will be based off your application, personal essay, and letter of recommendation.

An award in the amount of $10,000 will be given to one graduating senior from a Juneau High School. The scholarship may be used for tuition or to enable the student to purchase necessary books, academic supplies, tools, equipment, or uniforms. The scholarship will be sent to the institution the awardee will be attending.

  • Please make the email subject line your name/name of scholarship you are applying for. Example “John Smith/Alma Harris Scholarship”.

  2. List participation and awards in athletic and other extra-curricular activities.

  4. List work experience during the last 3 years.
  5. Other hobbies, skills or noteworthy items.

4. Personal Essay

Page Limit: 1-2 pages

Please attach your personal essay to your application. Please tell the scholarship committee about some of the following topics: career plans, special talents, interests, accomplishments or any obstacles you have encountered and how you overcame them.

5. Letter of Recommendation

Your letter of recommendation must be from an individual willing to attest to your ability to succeed. Your letter of recommendation can be from teachers, counselors, employers, former employers, co-workers, community leaders, or other persons who know you well and who can evaluate your academic, professional ability and potential, and personal character. Your letter of recommendation cannot be from a family member. The letter should describe your strengths, whether in academic achievement, intellectual abilities, leadership, or character.
