Chartered in 1952, AFT-Oregon, a state affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, is a non-profit organization representing 17,000 Oregon workers in K-12, community college and higher education in faculty and classified positions; and child care workers, in both public and private sectors. AFT-Oregon, in coalition with other unions and community groups, advocates for quality education and health care for all Oregonians, and gives working people a voice in our state’s capitol.
AFT-Oregon has participated in the passage of legislation with improvements in many areas important to Oregonians, including: Part-time Faculty Healthcare, Public Student Loan Forgiveness eligibility; Minimum wage; Patient Protection; The Public Employee Collective Bargaining Act; Education reform and funding; and Workers Compensation.
Available Scholarships
Carl J. Megel Scholarship of $1,500 is for a child/grandchild of an AFT-Oregon member who is graduating from high school and will be enrolling in a post-secondary program in the fall.
Albert F. Shanker Scholarship of $1,500 is for a child/grandchild of an AFT-Oregon member who is already attending a post-secondary education program and will be continuing in the fall.
Shirley J. Gold Scholarship of $1,500 is available to a member of AFT-Oregon who is furthering their education.
Deidre Mackey and Grace Misztal Scholarships consists of two awards of $1,500, one for a member, one for a member's dependent, who are part of a marginalized community and/or can demonstrate that their studies will work to advance the cause of social justice and help end discrimination.
