Our annual Mary Rohrscheib Teaching Scholarship was created in loving memory of Josh’s grandmother, a devoted third and fourth-grade teacher who made an impact on so many young lives.
The scholarship is offered annually to celebrate and encourage our next generation of great teachers. In order to be considered for the Mary Rohrscheib Teaching Scholarship, students are encouraged to respond to the following prompt: A 750-1,000 word essay about the impact of a special teacher and the lessons the student will carry forward throughout their own career in education.
Mary was a third and fourth grade teacher, who spent most of her career teaching in Central Illinois. This photo is from 1973, when she was honored as Macon County Teacher of the Year. I recently found her notes from when she was considered for this honor. She shared as part of her teaching philosophy the words of William Arthur Ward’s note on teachers: “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”
