Applications are due February 15 each year. Once the application process is closed, applications are sent to each selection committee. Reviewers independently “score” each application. The highest-ranking applicant is considered the recipient of the scholarship. If there is a tie between top candidates, the selection is based on the candidate matching the preference as identified in the fund agreement.
Scholarship agreements are sent to each recipient requesting school and student identification information for distribution. It must be received before scholarship checks are mailed to the school at the beginning of August.
At Pyle Law, we understand the financial challenges students and families will face in college can be overwhelming. That’s why we have decided to offer an annual scholarship of $1,000 for a McPherson County High School graduate who is pursuing a career in the trades (vocational/technical schools).
My grandpa Edwin T. Pyle was born on August 21, 1924, in Beloit, Kansas. He was the son of Reverend John T. Pyle and Harriet A. Pyle. He was the third of four children. He moved throughout the State of Kansas during his early years while his father served as a pastor and conference superintendent of the Free Methodist Church. He was a star football and basketball player in high school and played basketball at the University of Kansas.
Grandpa Ed attended Central College and joined the U.S. Navy’s V-12 program at KU. He served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy and was on active duty during World War II. During that time, he met and then married my Grandmother Alice V. Hills. Grandpa Ed and Grandma Alice had three children – my father Tom, John, and Bill. He later married Reva S. Alleman and they had one daughter – Patty.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Grandpa Ed moved to McPherson, Kansas, and started Pyle Construction. During his lifetime, he started and ran many other businesses – gas stations, supply companies, motels, restaurants, skating rink, bowling alley, etc.
I worked the summers for my Grandpa Ed at Pyle Construction from age 12 to 21. I worked various jobs as a sweeper, mud tender, roofer, carpenter/plumber/electrician apprentice, general laborer, and more – you name it I probably did it. Grandpa Ed taught me the value of hard work and humility. I am proud to sponsor a scholarship in his name!
