The Josie Washington Memorial Scholarship is in memory of a very devoted member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Kappa Zeta Chapter. Josie Washington was an educator in the Dallas public schools, who taught much of her career at Lincoln High School. During her life she belonged to many organizations and volunteered her services wherever needed. Upon her death, Josie Washington left an endowment to her sorority. The Kappa Zeta chapter elected to set up a scholarship fund to honor her memory and generosity to our chapter.
Purpose
The scholarship is to be awarded to a high school senior who is considered an “Unsung Hero”: As an "unsung hero," this student is someone who has overcome usual circumstances, performed humanitarian services or heroic deeds in the community, school or through their public or religious affiliations.
Award
The winner will be selected based on the submitted documentation and recommendation letters, as well as, an interview. The winner will be honored in Spring 2025.
Eligibility
- Must be a high school senior and resident of a city within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
- Must plan to pursue post high school studies (2-or 4-year college or accredited Technical/trade School).
The scholarship submission window opens November 16, 2024 and closes January 16, 2025 at 11:59 PM. Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered. Download a student checklist with the steps below and scholarship information for all offered scholarships.
To apply, applicants will need to complete the following steps:
- Create a folder in your Google Drive and name the folder First Last_24-25 KZ Scholarships (ex: Jane Doe_24-25 KZ Scholarships).
- Update the share settings on your folder to include that "anyone with the link" may view.
- Inside of the main folder, you will create and name six (6) additional folders titled as listed below:

- Official transcript (Unweighted GPA-4.0 scale)- In this folder you will insert a copy of your official high school transcript with rank and unweighted GPA (4.0 scale). Be sure you have asked your counselor for an unweighted copy of the transcript).
- Community Service/Volunteer Hours- In this folder you will insert a single consolidated document displaying all community service and volunteer hours with dates of activities and total hours calculated.
- Student Extracurricular Activities- In this folder you will insert a single consolidated document of extracurricular activities and awards, etc. with dates of activities
- Recommendation Letters- In this folder you will insert two letters of recommendation from any of the following: High School Teacher/Administrator/Counselor, Community Leader, Minister/Church Leader or Supervisor from work or Community Service Project.
- Scholarship Essay (PDF Copy)- In this folder, you will insert a PDF copy with a name that includes the scholarship's name- ex: Jose Washington Memorial Essay). Josie Washington Memorial essay Topic: In 500 words or less tell us who is your hero and why, including how their actions have changed your life.
- Headshot (JPEG or PNG)- In this folder insert a digital photo (headshot) in JPEG or PNG format.
