The objectives of the AIST Pittsburgh Chapter Scholarships are to reward and encourage AIST Pittsburgh Chapter area high school seniors or currently enrolled undergraduate students preparing for a career in engineering or metallurgy by providing a grant of financial support during full-time attendance at any accredited North American college or university.

Awards

The Pittsburgh Chapter scholarship program will award three (3) scholarships. Any candidate applying for a scholarship will only be eligible to win one of the aforementioned scholarships.

Eligibility

The student must be the child (including step-child, adopted child or ward), grandchild or the spouse of an active AIST Pittsburgh Chapter member in good standing. A member in good standing is defined as an AIST member who has been active in the chapter for at least two consecutive years. Members of the Material Advantage program at local Pittsburgh Chapter area colleges are also eligible to compete for the scholarships. The student must be accepted into or currently enrolled in an eligible, full-time curriculum at an accredited university or college. Preference will be given to applicants studying metallurgy or engineering majors relevant to iron and steel production, awards may be given to eligible student(s) studying other majors.

Selection

Scholarship applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Award Committee. The Committee consists of a Chairman (AIST Pittsburgh Chapter Member), up to four additional members of the Pittsburgh Chapter and the Secretary of the AIST Pittsburgh Chapter. The awards will be made without regard to financial need.

Rules

  1. The scholarship must be used at an accredited college or university.
  2. The student must start the course of study at the university or college in the fall of the same year that the Scholarship is awarded.
  3. The AIST Foundation will forward the scholarship stipend, as a lump sum, to the college or university for deposit in the account of the student.
  4. In cases where the student’s enrollment is delayed or interrupted for any reason, the Secretary must be advised immediately. Forfeiture of scholarship funds may be required.

  1. Scholarship application
  2. Essay on one of the following topics:
    1. Describe an accomplishment that you have achieved while you have been a student. Why were you successful? How will your success influence your future plans as an engineer?
    2. Describe in detail your strengths and interests. Describe how you will apply your skills to a career in the steel industry or as an engineer.
    3. Describe in detail the challenges that face the steel industry. What opportunities exist for graduates to improve the success of companies within the industry?
  3. A current resume with work experience (focusing specifically on field-related internships or jobs) and any extracurricular activities, noting any leadership positions, other honors and scholarships received.
  4. A recommendation or evaluation from a Counselor, Teacher or Professor must be included with the application.
  5. Copy of current high school or college transcripts.
