The chapter set up this scholarship to honor the memory of our member Dick Shaw. Dick was a well-respected inspector for Worksafe BC, who was a tireless advocate for blasting safety. He passed from a heart attack in 2007 shortly before he was due to retire.
This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time post-secondary student in Canada who's study relates to explosives or blasting.
Requirements
- Applicant must be studying a subject with some relevance to the non-military use of explosives or blasting (e.g.: mining, civil or chemical engineer, or geology, seismic exploration, avalanche or blasting physics)
- We are flexible on the subject providing the applicant has an interest in pursuing a career that could involve blasting
- Studies may be at any level (ie: certificate, diploma, masters or doctorate)
- We are not particularly interested in a student's GPA, but they must be in good standing with the institution
- Applicants do not need a link to the ISEE Chapter
- Submission of a "paper" entitled "The safe use of controller blasting in modern construction and mining"
- This may be in any media format (ie: essay, Powerpoint presentation, form of mixed media, movie, etc)
- The goal of the assignment is to convince a skeptical public that explosives are very fundamental and useful to modern society, not just destructive
- Often, all the public hears or sees about explosives is that they can cause death and destruction but, if one really digs down, almost every facet of our modern civilization is dependent somewhere on explosives
- The work should be original and any quotations for the work of others must be properly referenced
- Candidates must be Canadian Citizens or landed Immigrants
- Applicants studying in Canada but in the process of transferring outside the country, will be eligible providing the subject is very relevant to explosives or blasting
- Other documents may be required, such as resume, transcripts or letter of acceptance
Funds
The awarded funds will be a one-time payment and are to be applied towards the following items:
- Tuition fees
- Parking passes at the educational institution
- Student union fees
- Course books or software
- Residence fees
- School supplies, including but not limited to computers and tablets
