The Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association (AAHA), the Atlantic Affiliate of USA Hockey, is honored to offer a scholarship in memory of Daniel Triano to a student who plans to continue their education beyond high school and who is a member of USA Hockey Officiating in the AAHA.
A one thousand dollar ($1,000) non-renewable scholarship is available, to a high school senior who is registered with USA Hockey and is an active on ice official in the AAHA.
About Daniel Triano
Daniel was a Level 2 official who lost his life after an automobile accident on June 15, 2016 when he was 17 years old.
Daniel was born and raised in Kenilworth, NJ. In addition to being a referee, he also played for the New Jersey Devils Youth Club for 12 years and was a 3-year varsity player for Jonathan Dayton High School ice hockey team. Daniel volunteered as a junior coach with the New Jersey Dare Devils, a team made up of special needs players.
Daniel was a loving son and brother, a tremendous teammate, and a friend to all who knew him. He was a compassionate soul. From the way he lived his life, we are sure he would want everyone to remember to respect and be kind to one another.
Selection Criteria
Applicants must be a high school senior who is a current USA Hockey registered official (for a minimum of two seasons) who regularly officiates games in the AAHA without regard to race, sex, religion or financial need. Scholarships are non-renewable and selections made by the Scholarship Committee are final.
Selection will be based on:
- School transcript which includes grades, GPA and class rank
- Two teacher letters of recommendation (sent via email to atlanticdistrictrefs@gmail.com)
- Officiating assignor or supervisor letter of recommendation (sent via email to atlanticdistrictrefs@gmail.com)
- Standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, etc.)
- The application must be accompanied by a typed essay of 500 words or less on “The Value of Officiating Hockey to My Personal Development.
Announcements of the scholarship awardee will be made in May via the email address included in the application. Only the applicant selected to receive a scholarship will be notified.
The awardee must respond in writing to accept the scholarship by the date in the notification letter.
The recipient must provide a copy of the letter of acceptance to the school they plan to attend. This can include junior colleges, trade schools, and the like.
Procedure
Students must complete the online application form and upload the following documents as attachments.
Each document must be labeled with your First and Last Name and document type (i.e. Jim Smith-
Transcript; Jim Smith-Essay).
Submitted applications that are not in compliance with these instructions will not be reviewed.

- Students must provide an officiating supervisor or assignor and two teachers with the email - atlanticdistrictrefs@gmail.com to submit their letters of recommendation.
