Intermediate Aerobics and Dance - 1st year


Designed for students who are at the intermediate/advanced level of fitness. The student will maintain and improve cardiovascular fitness through the use of continuous rhythmic dance movements and strength building exercises.



Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate improved endurance by being able to perform vigorous, nonstop movement;

2. Demonstrate improved strength and flexibility as demanded by weight room exercises as well as cool-down stretches;

3. Demonstrate improved coordination and rhythm by being able to perform the dances taught in class;

4. Explain rules for aerobic exercise, understand bodily changes through aerobic exercise, and be able to set up your fitness program.


Topics:

Course topics will include the following:

1. Concepts of Aerobic Activity

a. Explaining and understanding the difference between aerobic and anaerobic activity
b. Identifying ways of applying overload and specificity to an exercise program

2. Cardiovascular Activity

a. Techniques to obtain cardiovascular efficiency
b. Self-testing techniques
c. Circuit training
d. Step workouts

3. Anaerobic Activity

a. Interval Training
b. Strength developed through weight training exercises

4. Flexibility Activity

a. Techniques for optimum stretch
b. Value of flexibility
c. Introduction to Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation stretching techniques

5. Relationship of aerobic exercise and nutrition

a. Pre-exercise meals
b. Carbohydrate loading

6. Basic first aid for the aerobic dancer

Method of Instruction:

1. Participation in class activities

2. Analysis and demonstration by instructor


Types of Assignments:

1. Written exam that demonstrates knowledge of aerobics

2. Book report that critiques a book on fitness

3. Construct a journal that analyzes exercise activities and how the individual’s physical and mental attitude is affected by the activities
