Music in World Culture - 1st year
Centers upon the listening experience, building a vocabulary for the discussion of musical and socio-cultural issues, and encouraging the use of shared concepts in personal self-expression. The class will feature lecture, group discussion, and the viewing a series of videos.
Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize and identify the music of many cultures;
2. Describe the elements of style, rhythm, pitch and form which comprise a given music genre;
3. Comprehend the roles and functions of music in both contemporary and traditional culture;
4. Appreciate the diversity of world music and understand the homogenization trend in the world music.
