Library and Information Literacy 2 - 1st year
The student will extend and review course objectives from Library 1. Coursework will be integrated with the writing of a research paper. Emphasis will be placed on evaluation of sources and use of academic libraries.
Objectives:
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Define by:
A. Refining appropriate questioning techniques to clarify requirements of a research assignment;
B. Selecting from a range of topics;
C. Developing focus questions;
D. Making predictions about likely sources of information;
E. Using reference sources to explore a topic and identify issues and subtopics.
2. Locate by:
A. University libraries;
B. Surveying all aspects of a resource and recognizing the significance of cross-references and sub-topics;
C. Searching appropriate databases within the school and wider community;
D. Using advanced search techniques to refine search results.
3. Select/analyze by:
A. Interpreting, comparing and selecting information after evaluating for accuracy, bias, omission and logic;
B. Understanding and complying with copyright requirements;
C. Using a variety of primary and secondary sources;
D. Recording bibliographic sources using MLA or APA format.
4. Organize/Synthesize by:
A. Categorizing information according to an outline;
B. Gathering additional information to support a hypothesis.
